57-year-old Vance Belter was arrested Sunday two days after police say he gunned down Democratic

State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband and shot in wounded state Senator

John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

Acting U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota, Joe Thompson, says Belter went to the

homes of four

Minnesota state lawmakers with the intent to kill them, disguising himself as a police officer

and banging on doors in the middle of the night. When police responded to the Hortman home,

they saw a man dressed in body armor that shot at them and managed to get away. Authorities say

Belter had a hit list of 45 elected officials, all Democrats.

He allegedly surveilled his victims' homes and took notes.

Belter is facing state and federal charges of murder, attempted murder, and other crimes.

He's being held in federal custody.
