Summary

PRACTICALITY. After finishing my keynote out in Dublin last week I was interviewed by some Irish press. In this one we cover the falsehoods of today's entrepreneurial landscape and the massive lack of practicality I'm seeing. Today, those who would've taken consulting gigs 10 years ago are starting businesses because that's the thing to do and it's easy to get money. But, what I'm concerned about, is what's going to happen when the money dries up. If you're not in because it's your truth you're not going to be able to make it out when things get hard and that's what worries me.

Hey guys, it's Gary Vay, Nerd Chuck, and this is the GaryVee audio experience.

It's actually very tried and true, the same stuff that would have worked in 1954,

and the same stuff that would have worked in 1837, that's what I believe in.

I'm old school like that. I think that we need more old school right now,

because everybody's just 38 buzzwords in the room. I mean, I can only sit through so many,

I'm going to be the Airbnb of, I'm going to be the Uber of, right? Here's what it's speaking to.

0:34.0

It's speaking to a very immature fake entrepreneur land. Everybody's a founder.

If I walk into Harvard or Stanford, 10 years ago, and go, how many of you were going into investment banking, Wall Street, or consulting?

0:49.0

Raise your hand. 85% of the room is raising their hand. If I ask today, how many of you are starting a company right out of here? 85% is raising their hand.

0:57.0

And what I think is fascinating is we're also talking to a group that didn't start off thinking that that's what they were.

1:04.0

So they're trading a $387,000 a year consulting job, and what they want to trade it for is $48 million in exit money.

1:13.0

How about a $387,000 a year business that you love, because it's around sailing?

1:19.0

I mean, if you headline this, it's practicality. We are lacking practicality.

1:26.0

So what I'm fascinated by the current era is that somewhere about 10 years ago, when they were 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, they caught the bug of, wait a minute, I'm going to be zucks.

1:39.0

And so they course corrected from being built as a good student, a great manager, a great thinker, an operator, to somebody who needs to be completely creative, chaotic, and has a stomach for adversity and change, at a rapid pace that higher education never brings to the table.

So again, much like I tell Huckster, Hustler, entrepreneurs like myself, you need to be self-aware, you're not a genius, you're a hard worker, you'll push it through, you'll find an angle.

2:10.0

I say the same to my highly educated friends, which is like, let's calm down right now. Grandpa can't buy the naming rights to a library when it comes to the market.

2:18.0

The market doesn't care what your last name is.

2:21.0

Guys, thanks so much for listening to the audio experience. It would mean the world, and I mean the world, if you could go and leave a rating on iTunes, wherever you're kind of listening to this, your word of mouth is my oxygen.
