After midnight.

The office never felt unusual at first.

It was older than the businesses around it, the kind of place that had been renovated,

just enough to stay functional without ever really losing its age. The floors carried sound

in a way that newer buildings didn't, and the layout felt slightly off compared to modern spaces,

with narrow hallways and rooms that didn't quite line up the way you'd expect. But none of that stood out

as anything more than what you'd expect from an older building that had been repurposed over time.

The work itself didn't leave much room to think about it anyway. Most days followed the same rhythm.

People came in, settled into their desks, worked through what needed to be done and left. During busier times of the

year, some stayed later than others, occasionally long enough that it made more sense to sleep there

for a few hours than to go home and come back again. It was during those late nights that the first

thing started to happen, nothing dramatic, nothing that would have made anyone stop what they were doing

and take it seriously on its own. It was the kind of thing that could be explained away without much

effort if you didn't think about it too long. Someone would hear movement in another room when

everyone else was accounted for. A sound would carry down the hallway in a way that didn't match where

it should have come from. Once or twice something would be out the hallway in a way that didn't match where it should have come from.

Shifted just enough that it was noticeable, but not enough to feel intentional.

On their own, none of it meant anything.

That was how it stayed for a while.
