Summary

For the first time in over 70 years, the United Kingdom's head of state is a King, not a Queen. Charles III begins his reign as a monarch already well known to his public. His long held views have been aired, his life documented by television and tabloids, his relationships picked over through fifty years of adult life. How will this change the type of monarchy we have and the connection the king and his country share? We hear from eminent historians, civil servants, thinkers about the challenges this could pose. Historians Simon Schama and Dan Snow, former Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell, journalist Ash Sarkar and former Supreme Court Lord Jonathan Sumption join us on the podcast. We're guessing that by now you'll have seen those pictures outside Buckingham Palace of the new King, King Charles III, and the Queen Consort, Camilla, greeting the public for the first time as King.

We're guessing by now that you'll have heard some of those extraordinary anecdotes from the Commons, perhaps the former Prime Ministers, and we'll bring you a couple of clips a little bit

later. But actually, what we wanted to do on this episode of the newsagents was bring you some

0:25.8

really big thinkers putting to us the challenges that will present themselves for King Charles

0:33.7

the third. You've also been getting in touch with us with very practical questions about

0:38.0

what this change and this moment of national mourning actually means for all our lives. The money

0:45.5

will still remain valid with the Queen's head on it. The passports issued in the Queen's name

0:51.1

will of course still be valid. But some things have been cancelled.

The Premier League has announced it will be counselling all football matches this weekend.

1:01.3

The proms, even the last night of the proms, will go.

1:05.2

They will be cancelled as a sign of respect.

1:08.3

A lot of events that were meant to be taking place have been told to cancel.

1:12.6

And I think that's going to be quite a difficult balance for some people who are trying to

1:18.0

work out where to land between respectful and that sense of carrying on doing the things that they

1:25.2

love. And we're going to be addressing all those issues in today's

1:29.2

chat. And I think what's really interesting about it is there has been fantastic outpouring

1:34.5

of emotion, well-judged interventions. There has been respect shown, affection shown for the

1:42.6

Queen. And there has been interesting guidance as well from the

1:45.6

Cabinet office saying it's not obligatory to cancel things. You can carry on with your lives as

1:50.6

normal. But a number of bodies have thought, well, actually, no, well, on balance, we're going to

1:57.2

cancel. And so, as you say, football matches are off this weekend. Kids games are

2:01.9

off this weekend, which I suspect is going to leave a lot of families wondering what on earth
