Hey, I'm Kelly McEvers, and this is Embedded from NPR.

And for the next few weeks, we're going to be bringing you a story about a young activist, someone like Malala Yusafzai or

Greta Thunberg, someone you've never heard of.

She's a dissident named Karima Baluch, and she was forced to flee to Canada because of her work

fighting for human rights in her home country of Baluchistan, which is a province of Pakistan.

In 2020, Karima's body... which is a province of Pakistan.

In 2020, Karima's body was found on the shore of Lake Ontario.

And this focused a lot of attention on the disappearances and deaths of other Pakistani dissidents.

And the huge pressure these activists face.

The six-part series is called The Kill List.

It comes to us from our friends at the CBC.

It was published last year in 2022,

and now in 2023, with two wars going on, and at a time when dissidents, activists, journalists

all over the world are under threat, we think this series is more important than ever.

It's hosted by CBC reporter and producer Mary

Link. She spent a year and a half investigating the disappearances of

activists, tracking down people in hiding, getting them to talk to her on the record.

She won a media award for Human Rights Reporting for the series from Amnesty International Canada.
