One thing I loved about my childhood and my adolescence being raised by my mother.

I did not have a father and my mother never remarried, so it was just my mother, my brother, and I.

But one thing I loved about her that I didn't really see the value in until I'm older, of course, was she didn't gossip. She didn't like celebrity

tabloids. She did not watch reality TV. Most importantly, she never gossiped or spoke ill about

people, at least not in front of me and my brother,

but just knowing her and her character and her heart,

she never gossiped, never spoke bad about people.

And one thing I remember from my childhood and growing up was how inclusive and open-minded my mother was and still is. For instance, we grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire,

and even though it's way up in New England,

and white is the predominant culture up there, she still found a way to expose us to many

different cultures and religions and just things that made us think outside the box.

My mom would bring us to shelters during, like, snowstorms where there was a lot of power

outages and people didn't have heat to stay at home, so they would go to these shelters.

And my mom would wake us up so early in the morning and say, here we go.

And she would give my brother two big jugs of orange juice and give me donuts and cookies.

And so you guys walk around to all the cots and ask people if they like a snack or some orange juice.

And so we were, gosh, eight, nine years old doing that.

She would bring us to the Greek festival. She would bring us

to a lot of Native American festivals, and we would watch them put on presentations. I remember

at the Greek festivals especially, we went every year, and it was around Christmas time.
