The... The origin of tonight's Twilight Zone begins with our writer Charles Beaumont

and his story which he had published in If magazine in 1954.

That story features a main character called Richard Austin,

and we meet him sat alone except for his wife, Mag, who is sick in bed,

struck down by mystery illness.

They are the last inhabitants of a futuristic metropolis built in Africa. But in order for that city to be built, mountains have been levelled, trees cut down, and

what comes with that of course is the habitat of animals being destroyed and also the displacement of the local people.

In this story the people who come to this city to live and work are struck down by this illness

but our main character stays on and it goes like this.

He had stayed on to fight and Mag would not leave without him.

Now she was dying and that was the end of it.

Or, he turned slowly, was it?

He walked out to the balcony.

The forced air was soft and cool, it moved in little patches

through the streets of the city.

Mumbara, his city, the one he dreamed about, then planned and designed and pushed into

existence.

The place built to pamper 500,000 people. empty now, and deserted as a giant churchyard.

Dimly he recognised the sound of the drums with this slow, muffled rhythm.

Directionless as always, seeming to come from everywhere and from nowhere, speaking to him, whispering.
