Summary

Not understanding hormones and calories is leading more of us to metabolic problems than a little bit. Unfortunately, losing weight and having healthier blood glucose levels isn’t as simple as eating less and restricting calories. To make matters worse, fasting, although a popular method of weight loss and health, is a lot more complicated than not eating.

In this we have experts such as Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Alan Goldhamer, and Mike Mutzel sharing their insights and research on how to approach fasting for weight loss and improved metabolic health.

Dr Jason Fung is a nephrologist and the co-founder of the Fasting Method program which has helped millions of people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes. Unlike many nephrologists, Dr Fung supports and encourages the education of diabetes and weight loss being possible through intermittent fasting. He’s a NY Times bestselling author and respected voice on fasting, weight loss, nutrition, and type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Alan Goldhamer is the founder of TrueNorth Health Center. His clinic focuses on healing patients through plant based vegan diets, and clinical fasting. Dr Goldhamer is also the author of The Pleasure Trap, Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health & Happiness.

Mike Mutzel is a functional medicine consultant in the natural product industry. He’s obsessed with evidence-based natural medicine and is the author of the Bell Fat Effect. Mike is also the founder of High Intensity Health.

This distinction between chronic caloric restriction and fasting, that I find really interesting.

0:14.7

And let us, for the sake of this discussion, assume that we have a person who is willing to endure an unlimited amount of

0:22.2

suffering.

0:23.5

And you even, you've talked a lot about the book Unbroken that you read about World War

to people in Japanese concentration camps and they were literally being starved.

0:34.1

And obviously, all of them got lean.

0:37.2

So what I want to understand is, okay, fasting seems to have all these tremendous benefits.

0:41.6

Chronic caloric restriction has some, but also has like this really damaging psychological

0:45.3

component.

0:46.2

If there was no damaging psychological component, would they be equal or is there still some

0:52.8

difference?

0:54.3

It all depends on how you do the caloric restriction.

0:58.3

So because it's not just about the calories.

1:01.4

It's about the hormones, right?

1:03.3

So you have to sort of take it not to sort of this two compartment problem.

1:08.4

You have to take it to like a three compartment problem, right?

1:10.6

There's what's coming in. There's what's stored, and there's what's being used.

1:15.4

Okay, so most people only think of sort of the two compartments and then the storage is sort of left over.

1:21.6

That's not the way the body works.

1:23.9

If insulin is high, your body is going to store calories.
