Randall Claude Weaver was born on January 3, 1948, to a farming couple living in

Valiska, Iowa. One of four children, the Weaver family was deeply religious, but found it

difficult to find a denomination that suited their needs.

So they hopped from church to church trying to find one that aligned with their views.

After graduating from high school in 1966, Randy studied at Iowa Central Community

College for about two years before dropping out in 1968 to enlist in the U.S. Army during the height of the

Vietnam War and then headed off to Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Now, though he told others that he was part of the prestigious Green Berets, according to his

papers, Randy was never part of any special forces during his time serving, but may have

received some general demolitions training as a combat engineer. While on leave and back in his

hometown, he met a woman named Victoria Vicki Jordensen. And introducing himself as Pete, because he claimed he hated his name, the pair began a

relationship, and when Randy was discharged at the rank of Sergeant on October 8, 1971,

they married the following month.
