This is Jasmine Singer, and this is Marianne Sullivan.

And this week, Marianne will be chatting with Alon Abrell, who is a cultural anthropologist,

a professor at Wesleyan University, and the author of

Saving Animals, Multispecies, Ecologies of Rescue and Care, which takes a serious look at the

challenges and benefits of something we're so used to that perhaps we don't notice how

extraordinary they are. Animal sanctuaries. It is true.

They are pretty much the best places on Earth. I kind of take them for granted.

And yeah, he looks at a lot of the difficulties that are faced in, it's not exclusively farm animal

sanctuaries. I just think it's exciting to have an academic do a deep dive into this topic.

And don't worry, Alan is not super academic. It's not boring. He's actually a really charming

guy. We also talk a lot about the latest controversies about charitable giving and

effective altruism. I think it's very funny that you just for the you just

said about your guest, he's not boring. Well, you know, you say somebody's an academic and some

people will think, oh, that's great. They're really serious. And other people will like remember

school and, and worry that they're going to fall asleep. You will not fall asleep, I promise you.

I'm sure Alon really appreciates all of this.
