Hello everyone, welcome back to the Epic Gardening podcast.

0:15.7

I hope you are doing well as we are moving into fall.

0:19.1

Hopefully you're planning out that fall garden.

0:21.0

Speaking of, we are back with Richard Canal owner of the small island seed company and

0:26.1

he specializes in rare unusual cold hearty vegetables and herbs and some of those are

0:31.7

perennials not annuals and we're going to talk today about why that's so important.

0:36.0

I'll say this Richard just to start it off.

0:38.1

I've been moving into more perennials in general for sure but kind of stair stepping from

0:44.0

the vegetable edible world like I'll do artichokes right and then I'll do I guess a couple

0:51.1

seasons worth of strawberries will count as a perennial in my world I started getting into

0:55.1

trees and so as you have a longer time horizon on a property of course perennials seem

1:14.3

themselves and start producing so like asparagus for example they say four years from seed yeah

1:21.5

and even when you plant the root crowns it'll still be a few years before you get a good

1:24.9

crop so the main reason the first reason why I really enjoyed perennials so much is that

1:31.0

they are a huge time saver we all spend so much time with annual crops and that includes

1:37.2

you know starting the seeds you got to select the seeds and start them and nurture them at the

1:43.2

seedling stage many plants can be susceptible to diseases fungus bacteria so it's great to not

1:52.3

have to deal with that as the years go by or at least less and less and less planting less

1:58.8

getting down on your knees and taking up the soil and planting that can get tiresome over the years
