Summary

New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 137 Virtually every institution in the world runs not only on official knowledge but also on something called "institutional knowledge," which is passed from older "generations" in the institution to younger ones. What happens when there's an interruption in the accumulation and transmission of institutional knowledge, though? Eventually, the answer is institutional collapse, but it usually takes us by surprise because our institutions keep running just fine until it's all of a sudden too late. In this eye-opening episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay introduces you to this important topic. Join him and start thinking about how we can deal with it before the catastrophe arrives. Latest from New Discourses Press! Hey everybody. It's James Lindsay. You're listening to New Discourse's Bullets, where I give a short bullet point like summary of a single topic relevant to woke that we all need to understand so we can win.

0:20.6

And I want to talk

0:21.5

about a very big problem a lot of people don't think about, which is institutional knowledge,

0:26.1

or more importantly, the institutional knowledge bomb. It's like a time bomb. And we've all set it up

0:31.2

for ourselves. It has like our degrowth strategy under the sustainability movement that we've

0:36.2

been part of is setting this up.

0:38.1

It's happened within our education system, and the whole defund the police movement is a huge

0:44.1

example, not just of what I've talked about in the past of communist entryism, but this idea

0:49.7

of an institutional knowledge bomb, which I'm not going to lie. I'm not the expert in any of this.

0:56.3

I'm just introducing a concept and I'm hoping people that understand policy and things

1:00.7

can recognize the nature of this problem and start doing something to correct it. So I'll start

1:06.3

off by telling you kind of what this is about. I want you to imagine this is kind of in the sustainability

1:12.4

realm. But you to imagine, you know, that we have, I don't know, refineries or something like that.

1:18.7

Some kind of, you know, high level production facility, a refinery, a nuclear power plant,

1:25.4

something like that. Okay. And as it turns out, these are real problems that real people are running into.

1:30.6

Imagine that you kind of like scale those back massively for a number of years.

1:36.8

So you shut down some refineries or you pair them back.

1:41.3

Turns out there's a lot of technical know-how that goes into making that thing work.

1:46.8

First, just even building it.

1:48.0

Secondly, making it work.

1:49.8

There were a lot of things that got figured out over decades as we built those things and

1:54.5

operationalize those things and that people, and this is the key point, have come to take
