Mr Speaker, today is the first day of a new approach.

As I record this, we are just a day into the Johnson era.

And what struck me is that what the new Prime Minister is trying to do

is to wipe away from history the whole Theresa May era.

Not just her deal, not just her compromise,

but almost her memory.

It is almost as if the May years never happened.

We will be able to look back on this period,

this extraordinary period as the beginning of a new golden age for our United Kingdom.

He is presenting himself and his government and his proposed Brexit deal

as if we are fresh from the EU referendum in 2016.

This is after all where many people believed we'd be

after the country voted to leave and David Cameron promised to resign.

We thought Boris Johnson would get the job,

and we believed that he as Prime Minister would present the EU

with the sort of deal that he is now presenting them with.

And that is the work that begins immediately behind that black door.

And though I am today building a great team of men and women.

Within hours of entering Downing Street,

Boris Johnson tore up the rules of modern politics.

The rules that say you pay respect to your predecessor.
