Summary

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!

If the towering stone walls of the Historic Scott County Jail could talk, they’d have chilling stories of mischief and madness to share—only now, some of their tales walk on two legs, while others seem to lurk in the shadows long after the lights go out. Built in 1904 to look like a medieval stronghold, this imposing jail once housed Tennessee’s most notorious offenders. Now, it’s a museum and a hub for paranormal research, guided by the tireless curiosity of Miranda Young and Kristy Sumner. In this classic episode of The Grave Talks, Miranda reveals the lingering presence of past inmates and guards who appear to have clocked in for eternity. Get ready for spectral sightings and echoing footsteps in a building where history is very much alive…or at least undead. This is Part Two of our conversation.

Scott County Jail, a conversation with Miranda Young. So the jail opened in, what did you say, 1904? Yes, the jail was built in 1904. This is technically the

1:18.1

third jail, but it's the most solid and fixed structure. The first jail was opened in 1850 whenever Scott County was established, and it was essentially an overturned wagon.

1:34.3

They said it kind of makes you think of like a caboose type structure.

1:40.1

They would hold inmates in that.

1:43.1

Then they did that for 10 to 12 years, and then after that they did build a structure.

1:51.1

There were our current jail sits that they did house inmates in.

1:56.8

But it wasn't until the early 1900s whenever we had that huge influx of people coming in for the coal mines and the timber mining and such, that they did go in and said, hey, we really want to show that we mean law and order and build a good firm solid structure.

2:17.1

So that's when they built this jail on the same foundation that the last one was on.

2:23.0

And they built it there in the two-story structure that was shaped like a castle.

2:29.2

How long did they use it as a jail then?

2:32.7

They used the jail up until 2008.

2:35.3

Oh, that's a long time.

2:37.9

Yes.
