Summary

Bisexuality is the largest sexual minority in the world – but according to psychologist Dr Julia Shaw, it’s the least well understood. She talks to Madeleine Finlay about her new book, Bi, which challenges us to think more deeply about who we are and how we love. She discusses the history of trying to define and measure bisexuality, sexual behaviour in the animal kingdom, and how we can improve health outcomes for bi people.. This is the Guardian. According to a recent survey from the Office for National Statistics, more than one in

0:18.9

This seems to show a positive move towards the destigmatization of non-heterosexualities.

But there's still a way to go. In her new book, psychologist Dr Julia Shaw looks at the realities of being by, from scientists trying to objectively prove the existence of bisexuality,

2:07.9

In other words, it's same and other genders and it is inclusive of all genders. So it's not transphobic, just to be clear,

2:16.0

because I think sometimes, unfortunately,

2:19.0

people use alternative words because they think

2:21.0

that bisexuality reinforces a gender binary which isn't true.

2:25.8

So actually I'd like to talk about science's attempts to objectively measure bisexuality and you can't see but I was doing air quotes there

2:36.7

because a very interesting study from 2020 came out which was covered quite widely in the media, often with headlines
