Summary

A sin is not simply breaking the rules. It’s when we say in our hearts, “God, I know what you want and I don’t care. I want what I want.”

Fr. Mike makes it abundantly clear that sin is defiance toward God—usually in favor of self-interest.

So often, when Catholics talk about sin people see our sense of morality as a set of rules that we arbitrarily follow. Those who criticize the Church’s moral teachings often accuse Catholics of misinterpreting Christ’s words when they are the ones who are twisting his words, while failing to recognize how our relationship with God is in the balance.

0:37.4

Yeah, there's the commandments and those I guess are rules.

0:39.7

And so if you break one of the commandments, you're breaking the rule, obviously.

0:42.7

But some people say like, well, how could it be a, how could it be wrong?

0:46.5

How could it be a sin if no one got hurt?

0:49.0

All you do, again, all you're doing is, is breaking an arbitrary commandment.

0:52.9

Well, here's the deal.

0:54.7

Not an arbitrary commandment because it comes from God himself.

0:57.2

So not an arbitrary.

0:58.5

B, the criterion of a sin being a sin or even being a grave sin has nothing to do with whether

1:05.9

someone got hurt or not.

1:07.3

Someone says, well, okay, so it's not breaking a rule.

1:09.1

It's not just based off of whether someone gets hurt or not.

1:11.6

But like sometimes we treat sins as if they're like an accident.
