Most people think that back pain and low energy and bad posture are discipline problems.

0:07.1

You think that they're design problems. Why is that?

0:10.7

Yeah, very interesting. Well, if you look at the data on the population of people around the world,

0:15.9

certainly people in the United States, a significant percent of adults in America, for example, have chronic or on or

0:23.9

repeated back pain. It's a huge problem. And as you get older, it gets worse and worse. I think,

0:30.6

I think it's clear if you look at what people do day to day, you can see quite clearly that

0:37.2

there's a cause and effect there.

0:39.5

What's the evidence around sitting in back pain?

0:43.4

You can look at sitting postures. The most interesting thing about that is you look at postures when

0:49.8

people sit. I study people sitting. I think it's quite interesting. There's data on this too, but if you were to look anywhere in buildings here in Austin or buildings in Tokyo or Singapore anywhere, you would see people sitting at their desk, hunched over their desk, their back, probably not even touching the back of their chair, keying on their computer for hours and hours on end.

1:14.1

That's how people sit.

1:15.2

I even at one point I needed a slide for my deck.

1:18.2

So of someone, you know, sitting in that posture.

1:21.1

So I googled photo of person working on a computer

1:24.1

or something like that.

1:25.3

And I got hundreds of pictures.

1:26.8

They were all essentially

1:27.9

identical people hunched over their decks the old c spine your your your spine is now curved forward

1:34.9

which is incredibly incredibly unhealthy and what what happens when you're you lean forward like that

1:41.5

is you put more stress on your spine but interestingly also your

1:46.2

vertebrae is curved curved forward so each vertebrae comes together on one side and opens up on the

1:52.8

other so on one side is putting pressure on your disc and the other side it's opening up opening up
