Summary
Perched against the rugged cliffs of California’s coastline, the Big Sur Lighthouse has watched over countless ships since its commissioning in 1889. Built as a beacon of safety, it became just as well known for the tragedies it witnessed—storms that swallowed ships whole, sailors lost to the waves, and families who arrived full of hope only to leave long before their first year was done. Isolation, danger, and restless emotion shaped life inside those walls.
But what becomes of that energy when the keepers are gone?
In this episode of The Grave Talks, we explore the history and hauntings of the Big Sur Lighthouse with Julie Nunes, whose research and experiences shed light on a place where the past refuses to stay quiet. Are the spirits of former lighthouse keepers still tending their post? Do echoes of fear, duty, and heartbreak linger in the structure itself? Or is something else—something older—still keeping watch over the sea?

| 0:00.0 | Today on the Grave Talks, the haunted Big Sir Lighthouse. |
| 0:18.3 | Originally commissioned in 1889, the Big Sur Lighthouse has been a beacon for those coming off the ocean in peace, and a final sign of life, as many lives were swept up by the ocean as their ships went down. |
| 0:31.6 | Not only as what is now known as the haunted Big Sir Sir Lighthouse has been structured by the sea, |
| 0:38.3 | and has been home to many families employed to watch the building, and to keep its lights shining bright. |
| 0:44.3 | Many of the families who called the Haunted Big Sir Lighthouse home lasted less than one year before calling it quits. |
| 0:51.3 | Maybe it was the isolation of living in such tight quarters that drove them out. |
| 0:56.7 | It could have been the constant anxiety that they felt watching ships come in and many go down. |
| 1:02.2 | Either way, emotions ran high in the Big Sur lighthouse for many generations. Does the energy that |
| 1:08.7 | these families felt still echo through the halls of Big Sur today? |
| 1:13.0 | Or do their spirits intelligently run the lighthouse from the other side? |
| 1:17.0 | It's questions like these that we have answered in today's episode of The Grave Talks. |
| 1:22.4 | As we talk with Julie Nunes about the ghosts of Big Sur. |
| 1:36.9 | Well, the lighthouse came to be because in 1948, the amount of ships that used to cross by it was maybe 102. |
| 1:39.3 | And then in 48, it went to almost 1,000 because of the gold rush. All the 49ers were coming out looking |
| 1:47.4 | for gold in California. That's when we started getting the shipwrecks and everything. So construction |
| 1:56.6 | began in 1887 and it was completed in August 1st, 1889, the first time it was lit. |
| 2:06.6 | And back then, it cost three payments that added up to about $110,000, which equals about $2.1 million in today's dollars. |
| 2:22.8 | Now, this lighthouse, obviously, it's out there. It's a beacon. A lot of shipwrecks out in that area. |
| 2:29.6 | This lighthouse was probably one of the last lights. |
| 2:34.7 | Many people on the sea saw before, I mean, not to go too more, |
| 2:39.3 | but before they passed, before their ships went down, |
| 2:42.1 | it was probably also one of the most welcoming things to see if they did make it into shore, correct? |
