Summary

Ken and Katherine Greer recently purchased the historic (and undeniably haunted) Beeson Mansion in Niles, Michigan. Built in 1847 by a local whiskey distiller, this stately home was sold to attorney Strother Beeson, who left his mark in an unusual way—by erecting a crypt for his mother, right across the street from the mansion. In time, others joined his mother in the afterlife and in the crypt.

Local legend has it that Strother’s daughter-in-law, Harriet, was so grief-stricken by the loss of her infant son that she continued to visit him nightly in the crypt. Today, Ken and Katherine plan to transform this incredible mansion into a haunted bed-and-breakfast. But as rumors of sobbing apparitions and flickering lanterns in the crypt suggest, they may have some spirited guests to accommodate—guests that checked in over a century ago and never checked out. This is Part Two of our conversation.

0:22.5

Oh, interesting.

0:23.2

And his might be more Native American.

0:27.3

The house is about a mile from what used to be Fort St. Joseph.

0:33.3

Back in the 1600s, it was built by the, I think, I think it's French Jesuits to preach to the Native Americans in the area.

0:45.1

And over the years, it was fought over and controlled by the French, the Spanish, the English.

0:54.9

I know the Native Americans held it for a while.

0:58.8

It's a long Old Sock Trail trading trail, which was a big fur trading trail that they used to use a lot.

1:09.4

Because it's right near the river, the St. Joe River.

1:14.6

So between, and that's why the fort was there, it was right on the river.

1:18.0

That would make sense to put it right on the river.

1:20.6

Yep.

1:22.0

I think the fort was around for about 200 years, and that's before the house was built.

1:27.5

So the history of the area goes way back then?

1:31.0

It sure does.

1:32.9

Weird from one person that lives in those apartments that are in the barn,

1:36.7

and they have activity with stuff moving.

1:40.2

So the entire area's got something going on.

1:43.6

Yeah, it doesn't surprise me that the barn would have activity either.

1:47.6

Right.
