Hello from Washington, I'm Chuck Todd, and this is the Chuck Todd cast.

So I'm excited by my subject matter today, spending a good 30 to 40 minutes with an

author named Marsha Barrett. She's author of a new book called Nelson Rockefeller's

dilemma, the fight to save moderate Republicanism. And you may think, oh, Nelson Rockefeller, that's a name from 50 years ago.

But where the Republican Party is today, to understand where it is today, you've got to understand where it was

and how we got here, how it got there.

And it's also fitting. We're recording on August 27th.

This happens to be my late father's birthday and his political hero was Nelson Rockefeller.

The only person he hung up a photo of, he had two photos that he hung up of in his office

over the years that he got sort of a hand photo from.

One was Everett Dergson, the Republican Senate leader from Illinois, and the other was Nelson Rockefeller.

I say my father, until his dying day. was stood for, we can talk about that. Of course, one of my great mentors was Doug Bailey,

who got his start doing Nelson Rockefeller campaigns

in the late 60s and 70s.

So to say that all things Nelson Rockefeller

sort of ring more personally to me is an

understatement so it's with that that I think you'll enjoy this conversation

that I have with Marshall but before we get started with that I have a few things

to talk about in this campaign.
