But a smile is not always what it seems. Keith Hunter Jefferson, also known as the

happy face killer or the smiley face killer co-opted the universal symbol for happiness, the smiley face,

and forever associated it with heinous, unthinkable acts of violence and cruelty.

Keith was born on April 6, 1955 in British Columbia, Canada. His parents, Les and Gladys Jefferson

had five children, three boys and two girls, and eventually relocated to the United

States, settling in Washington State. Coming from a long line of abusive men, Keith continued the

family tradition of aggression and mayhem. His paternal grandfather and his father were both

violent men with quick tempers. His father was an alcoholic who beat Keith savagely to punish him.

He also charged Keith rent for room and board, but didn't charge his brothers or sisters.

Les even convinced Keith he wasn't good enough to go to college, cutting off his education

right after he graduated high school. Keith's disturbing behavior started as young as five years old.
