On September 25, 1883, a man who happened to be

the last person seen with multiple victims, was hanged for what might be only one of his

handful of crimes. So if you like your coffee hot, but your bones chilled, sit back and start your

day with a morning cup of murder.

Robert Francis Burns was born sometime in 1840 in Limerick, Ireland. However, when the 1850s

rolled around and there was an influx of immigration due in large part to the gold rush, Robert

arrived in Australia in the year 1860 when he was 19 years old.

Eight years later, he married a woman named Ellen O'Leary, also an immigrant from Ireland,

and the pair eventually settled on a 70-acre plot of land in Dunkeld.

Now, around the beginning of 1879, Robert began working with a gang of railway

navies near Wickleaf, and while his wife and family would eventually end up in Stawwell,

he shared a tent with two other members of the group, Henry Wells and Francis Heenan.

On February 19, 18, 1879, Francis left the work site to conduct some

business at a bank in town. When he returned, though, he told the men how he was starting to feel

a little sick, and that quickly turned into vomiting, diarrhea, and complaints of being cold.

Francis soon became so sick that he had to stay at the work site until mid-afternoon,

before traveling by train the two short miles back to his tent.
