Summary

Today's Post - https://bahnsen.co/3JFT7AK

By the time you are reading this, the first half of 2023 will be complete.  I can't put exact market figures here because I am writing this middle of the market day, Thursday the 29th, so the precise finality is a day and a half away.  But the general themes that made the first half of 2023 what it was are quite clear, and I think you will find this "2023 halftime report" Dividend Cafe to be quite provocative.  And what else do you hope you find in the Dividend Cafe if not "provocative" ...

So let's jump into the Dividend Cafe and see what 2023 has delivered thus far and what might be on the horizon for the second half!

Welcome to the Dividend Cafe weekly market commentary focused on dividends in your portfolio and dividends

in your understanding of economic life. Well, hello and welcome to the Dividend Cafe. I am very excited as

0:17.7

we get ready to go into a kind of longer weekend. We have Independence Day next week.

0:23.2

And yet we are here at the halfway point of 2023. And so I'm recording on Friday, June 30th.

0:30.4

And markets up a decent amount here this morning. Anything could change between now and the end of the day.

0:35.7

But I can't give you like the exact number as to where markets close. So we'll have a kind of follow on, you know, real comprehensive

0:53.4

areas to where

0:54.1

things can come. But what I am going to do is just thematically, use our Dividing Cafe today to talk

1:01.9

about the kind of surprises in the first half of the year, expectations going into the second half of the

1:07.6

year, and all that kind of stuff. So hopefully this little midway point,

1:12.8

the sort of halftime update will be useful.

1:25.0

going to be talking about as big stories of the year. Because I think

1:29.7

that with surprises, I'm specifically referring to things that either did happen but didn't have

1:36.3

the response we would have expected or didn't happen when we thought they would have, that type of

1:41.7

a thing. And I don't just mean we like surprises for my

1:44.4

idiosyncratic or contrarian predictions, but I mean across the market, the sort of consensus

1:52.1

things that were still somewhat of a surprise. I'm going to start that list here. There will be

1:57.3

three things I just want to quickly kind of say I consider to be pretty

2:01.8

surprising in the first half of the year was the incredibly underwhelming economic output
