Emma Gatewood was married.

She was the mother to 11 children.

She was married to a really bad man.

He beat her, and this was during a time when it was not easy

for a woman to leave to get a divorce. But Emma did. Emma eventually

left her husband. And at the age of 66, with all of her children out of the house and on her own,

Emma Gatewood decided to go on an adventure.

She had read in a National Geographic magazine about the Appalachian Trail.

The Appalachian Trail is in the United States.

It runs from Georgia all the way up to Maine.

The National Geographic article had painted it in such glowing pictures.

Emma, with time on her hands, decided that's what I'm going to do.

And so she started the trail in Maine and began walking.
