Summary
"The Matchmaker" (October 4, 1994)
Whelp, it's our 250th episode (sort of), and we're celebrating by going back and reexamining our first-ever episode and, really, the reason this podcast exists in the first place: "The Matchmaker" from Frasier's second season, which the show used to tell viewers definitively that no, despite all appearances otherwise, Frasier Crane is not gay. We're joined again by Anthony Oliveira, who also helps us recount Frasier's entire history of seeming kinda gay, from being metaphorically born from Diane Chambers all the way until the reboot.
Buy Anthony's new book, Dayspring.
Read the New York Times article Drew mentions, "The Boys in the Writers' Room."
Read GEE's write-up in Emmy magazine, which is basically the same thing as actually winning an Emmy.

| 0:32.2 | Hello and welcome to Gayest Episode Ever, the podcast where we discuss the LGBTQ episodes of classic sitcoms. I'm Drew Mackey. I'm Glenn Lakin. And welcome to our 250th episode observed. According to my count on gayest episode ever.com, this is the 252 episode. And according to Apple Podcasts, we've actually done 300 and two episodes, but numbers don't really mean anything. I guess this is also our Christmas episode, but it's not Christmassy at all. It's just the last episode we're doing this year. We're putting ourselves ahead of Jesus because that's the American way. It's definitely the gay way. Yes. For this milestone, we are welcoming back to the show, the Pride of Canada, Anthony Olivera. Hey, that's me. The Pride of Canada. Oh, that's a mixed bag. I'll take it, though. Sure. Hi. It's |
| 1:12.6 | nice to be here. The state of Canada. Oh, yeah, you guys are loving that, aren't you? We're really not. |
| 1:18.6 | Guess how much we're loving that. Anthony, you are a journalist, culture, writer, and academic, |
| 1:25.7 | but this year you wrote your first novel, which is called Day Spring culture, writer, and academic, but this year you wrote your first |
| 1:27.7 | novel, which is called Day Spring. And yesterday, I believe, it was named one of the best Canadian books of 2024. Is that accurate? That is all accurate, yes. Except that I'm not actually sure it's technically a novel, but everyone is calling it one, so I'm going with it. What is it? What would you call it? It's, I mean, it's the, you know, shitty snooty. I mean, Frazier and I have a lot in common. And like, it's not a novel in the traditional sense. It's more just a bag of verse. Okay. But they wouldn't let me call it a bag of verse. And they also wouldn't spring for the bag of verse that I |
| 2:00.9 | wanted to produce. So it is full of pages that you turn in sequential order. So I guess it's |
| 2:06.4 | a novel. What a pitch. I'm so. What could you tell our audience about Dayspring if they |
| 2:13.2 | haven't heard about it and you think they might want to give it a read? Day Spring is a retelling of the Gospels from the point of view of the beloved disciple. |
| 2:23.4 | It is a bunch of gay porn. |
| 2:26.5 | It is sort of a weird memoir. |
| 2:29.8 | It's sort of unfixed in time. |
| 2:31.5 | The figure who is the beloved disciple by Christian tradition might live |
| 2:38.3 | forever. So it's like, what if you were 2,000 years old and still getting over your ex-boyfriend |
| 2:44.3 | who was also God? So that's what the book's about. That sounds awesome and also complicated and also |
| 2:50.4 | good. |
| 2:53.6 | It's some of those things. |
| 2:58.6 | I actually ordered it last night because I didn't know that much about it, but I'm like, |
