Between 1944 and 1974, the U.S. government sponsored thousands of human radiation experiments,

involving scientists, military officials, and government doctors, and funding from several big government agencies and universities,

such as Vanderbilt University and UC Berkeley. Over 20,000 humans were involved in these top secret projects to develop data

to protect the safety of nuclear weapons workers. This was largely in part due to the Atomic

Energy Commission's establishment in 1946 when Harry S. Truman signed the McMahon Atomic

Energy Act, transferring the control of atomic energy from military to civilian hands.

This shift gave the members complete control of plants, laboratories, equipment, and personnel assembled during the war to produce the atomic bomb.

The main focus up until 1945.

After 1945, attention shifted to harnessing the energy in a controlled fashion

for naval propulsion and for making electricity. And eventually to the technological evolution

of reliable nuclear power plants. Additionally, the AEC was largely the starting point

to the various human radiation experiments,

which were tests completed to see the effects of radiation on the human body.

Most often, American citizens who had checked into hospitals for a variety of ailments

were secretly injected, without their knowledge, with various amounts of plutonium,

a highly radioactive element

that was synthetically produced at UC Berkeley in California by placing uranium in a particle accelerator,

and causing them to absorb neutrons. These experiments included directly injecting plutonium

and other radioactive elements to mostly terminal patients without their consent,

feeding radioactive traces to children, enlisting doctors to administer radioactive iron to impoverished pregnant women,

exposing U.S. soldiers and prisoners to high levels of radiation, irradiating the testicles of prisoners,

which caused severe birth defects, exhuming bodies from graveyards to test them for radiation,
