We're all familiar with the classic trope of a supervillain's layer.

We remember our Saturday morning cartoons, where the arch enemy of our favorite superhero

conceals themselves in their dark, decrepit hideaway, creating plans for world domination.

But, as always, real life sometimes can prove to be stranger than fiction.

Villains certainly exist in the real world, some that show themselves to be far more monstrous than anything ever seen in a Saturday morning cartoon.

When we think of a supervillain lair, we think of an eerie hovel, broken-down carnival, or a cobweb-ridden hideaway, maybe a secret

cave deep within a mountain filled with guns and evil plans. The aesthetics of these layers are

as disturbing as the residents, a mirror for the supervillains' dark intentions. But our real-life

supervillains claim a different sort of refuge, a super supervillain layer that allows them to blend in,

to hide in plain sight. Every villain needs a layer, a place set apart from the world where their

masks can be shed and darkness may rain unchecked. For years, one such place lay glittering

in the Caribbean sun, its secrets camouflaged by palm trees and privilege.

Most called it a private paradise, yet the truth, in reality, is far less glamorous.

Whispers and rumors spoke of a fortress of silence, a playground for the powerful, and a prison
