It was just a few days into the new year when Bob Phillips walked into his North Carolina office, and he got this phone call.

And I will say, jokingly, but respectfully, we get a lot of calls here.

You know, we're a nonpartisan.

Bob works at Common Cause.

That's a nonprofit focused on government accountability, voter rights.

And it's easy just to kind of briefly listen and say, hey, we don't do that.

This call, it was from someone he didn't expect.

The daughter of a GOP operative had been keeping track of for years.

My first instinct was that maybe she was going to blow some steam at us

since we're a plaintiff and a lawsuit that

involves her father's work.

This woman's dad was a guy named Tom Hoffler.

He died back in August.

One reporter called him the Michelangelo of gerrymandering.

Hoffler spent his whole life helping Republican legislators redraw congressional maps all over the country.

These are maps that common cause is now challenging in court.

But when Hoffler's daughter called up Bob Phillips, she was bearing gifts.

It turns out her dad left behind a cache of hard drives, filled with more than 75,000 files.
