So what is it with bridges?

There always seems to have existed a strange fascination with these structures, both good

and bad.

We marvel at the engineering and utility of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco,

or the George Washington Bridge in New York City,

or the causeway that crosses Lake Panchatrain in Louisiana,

basically a 24-mile bridge that spans the entire lake and connects the cities of Metare and Mandeville.

It's the longest over-water bridge in the world.

But what I'm interested in is the darker side of these structures.

Not the romance of the covered bridges in Madison County, Iowa or the stunning bridge that spans the New River

Gorge in West Virginia, iconic to the point that it made it under the back of the state quarter.

It's the longest single-span Arch in the US and the third highest

bridge in the country. All that's awesome, really. I love the history of bridges, the design,

the math involved. I love the metaphorical

significance of bridge building as well as the real world benefits when it comes

to safely decreasing travel times.

Okay, all of that being said, bring on the ghosts.
