Summary
For our "Sunday Context" episode, go back to the Clinton administration and look at how Republicans swept into power in 1994. It allowed them to present a new version of the GOP -- and organize a unified opposition to Clinton just as the Lewinsky scandal was exploding. Jody and Niki are joined by pollster and author Kristen Soltis Anderson.

| 0:00.0 | Hey everyone, Jody Avergan here. Welcome to our Some Sunday context series where we bring you |
| 0:09.2 | conversations new and from the archives that try and give you a little context for what we are up to here in |
| 0:14.7 | 26. Now this past week, as you heard, we ran a two-parter on Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, |
| 0:21.5 | the scandal, |
| 0:27.4 | and the investigation. We tried to layer in the changing media environment as a huge factor in that story. We also touched on the fact that the Republicans, starting in 1994, were newly emboldened |
| 0:34.1 | and were really ready to go after Clinton over his affair with Lewinsky. |
| 0:38.7 | So today, an episode from the archives looking at how they swept into power in the 1994 midterms. |
| 0:45.0 | That year, a Georgia congressman by the name of Newt Gingrich became the face of the party |
| 0:49.7 | and was able to craft a message on two fronts. |
| 0:53.2 | One, using the contract with America, which was a |
| 0:56.3 | simple set of GOP principles that he basically got every candidate to sign onto that year. And then, |
| 1:03.3 | on the other front, a real sabbiness when it came to messaging and the new media environment. |
| 1:09.2 | Now, I think this is important to think about because it is obviously |
| 1:12.1 | a very popular parlor game to talk about how we got to the GOP that we have today. And I do think |
| 1:18.5 | that a lot of it started with the 1994 midterms. That said, I think it's safe to say that the idea of |
| 1:24.7 | a GOP built around a platform of big ideas feels quite antiquated |
| 1:29.3 | at this point, but the tactics of the party owe a lot to the Gingrich Revolution, for one, |
| 1:35.2 | taking advantage of that new media environment like Fox News and the internet ascendant, |
| 1:40.1 | but also this idea that the most important thing, by far, is unity. |
| 1:47.8 | Everyone in the party needs to get in line with what the leadership dictates and that a lot of the fealty is going to be organized around fierce opposition |
| 1:52.1 | and obstruction to whatever the Democrats in power are up to. |
| 1:55.9 | And I don't think you need me to tell you that we are living with the most extreme |
