Summary

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!

In 1922, following the discovery of King Tut’s Tomb, Egyptian-themed theaters became quite popular. The Egyptian Theater in DeKalb, Illinois, was one of more than 100 similarly-themed theaters built in the US. Construction began in the spring of 1929, and a few months later, in December, the Egyptian Theatre opened its doors - just a couple of months after the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began.

The renovations and resurgence of the theater have apparently awakened some old ghosts within its walls. Spirits from the vaudeville era and some from present times are reported to mingle with the living, haunting performances and after-shows at the theater. According to legend, six unique spirits are residing at the Egyptian Theatre. From the lady in green to Irv, one of the theater’s biggest supporters, and even a mysterious young girl – they all make their presence known.

Today, Part Two of our conversation about the Egyptian Theater with marketing and communications director Jeanine Holcomb.

Today on the Grave Talks, part two of our conversation about the Egyptian theater in

0:06.0

DeKalb, Illinois. Have you had any performers or people who have gone into that dressing room with no knowledge of

0:14.4

anything and then been like something is going on here. So most of the time

0:20.0

our performers are seeing our balcony ghost which is interesting and that's why for the longest time we didn't think our dressing room was haunted because I think as someone who knows who's been a performer when you're backstage like you said there's so much energy like there could be a ghost screaming in the

0:32.8

middle of the room during dance recitals and no one would hear it because they're so

0:36.3

loud and it's so much activity down there. One thing we have is say we have the

0:41.0

balcony closed and this is a story I had heard numerous times and then had it happened to me was you'll have a performer say who was the woman of the balcony.

0:48.8

So I had this exact example we had a magician, the balcony was closed so if I'm taking

0:53.5

pictures as marketing I'm usually in the front row of the balcony because I don't

0:56.5

have to worry about anyone behind me. Beautiful shots fantastic so that's where I was.

1:00.1

So after the show I go up I'm like hey Bill what do you think how is the show music it was great? was taking photos. He goes, no, no, no, I saw you. There was a woman in a dress just kind of like

1:14.8

walking back and forth in the upper corner and Alex just kind of looks at me like, mm-hmm. And I was like,

1:20.0

and of course, skeptical me, I'm like, how could you tell she was in a dress though like that's from the upper balcony and he goes

1:26.7

yeah no no no no because the lights in the walkway when she walked back and forth they kept getting blocked by your skirt and I'm like you shut up

1:35.0

I was up there the entire time so yeah we get that all the time that people see the woman in the green

1:40.2

dress in our balcony in my guess is if the skirt was kind of blocking the light,

1:46.0

that makes it seem like it was a long skirt.

1:48.4

So then you're trying to do a performance and you're a magician and you've got to remember all these little your own personal cues

1:57.0

and it's like who is the woman of there

2:00.0

whole time would be so hard.

2:07.5

Wow. And Lisa, she's been seen at all times and she's the one where people don't even think she's a ghost. So what we've been, she's been described to us as in a long green dress that she was a

2:15.0

performer sometime back in the 30s or 40s often described with a long
