Once upon a time, there lived a garden worm. His name was Pip. He lived in a garden. It was peaceful and plentiful. The dirt was just right.

Pip had no intention of ever leaving. To him, this was the perfect place to spend his life.

During the day it was usually very hot, so he rested. But at night,

after the sun would set, Pip set out on all sorts of underground adventures. Pip would

make tunnels and enjoy some soil when he was hungry. Sometimes he would meet another worm, and sometimes he was by himself.

It was always comfortable underground, and he was never lost because he never went too far.

Once Pip was a grown worm, his parents had told him of a few rules worms had.

Always stay hidden.

If you must go to the surface, do it quickly and find your way back as soon as you can.

For there were treacherous things.

Giants live on the surface and birds so big,

they block out the sun as they swoop down to eat you.

His parents told him.

But Pip paid no attention to this.

He was a brave whir, and he was ready to go out into the world and find a home of his own.

And this is exactly what he did.

Soon Pip was a master borrower.

He loved his life in the soil. But one day, everything changed.

Pip had settled near the roots of a weed. Normally he liked to stay near the fern roots,

but today was different. There was a weed nearby, and suddenly it was pulled up. Everything surrounding the

roots, dirt and rocks went with it. Pip included. The sun was shining. It was very bright.
