We left off at the state resting their case, having laid out their trial stretch during

their case in chief, which was in a nutshell that Gacy wasn't insane.

But instead was a methodical, conniving man who planned his every move, and these qualities

cannot coexist within a person whose mind is irreparably broken.

That type of duality simply does not, cannot exist within a human being.

Defense must now attempt to convince the jury that a human being such as that not only

can exist, but in fact does.

The defense for its first witness calls Jeff Rignal, who the state refused to put on

the stand because he wrote and published a book about his harrowing nightmarish tale

prior to trial.

His testimony was gut-wrenching, and you've heard all the details of the attack during

the pod.

You've also heard about how the Chicago police refused to believe him and or chose to

ignore him, and how he ultimately had to track down his attacker on his own.

Rignal became so upset during his testimony that he wept and vomited while he was on

the stand while recounting his attack.

The most crucial aspect of Rignal's testimony was when in describing Gacy at the time of

the attack is that he became an entirely different person.

It was a Rignal's opinion that Gacy could not conform his conduct to the requirements

of the law, that he was driven by a force out of his control to purge the demons from

one's soul because he was so disgusted by the sexual acts that had just taken place.
