The program has become a national phenomenon as Britain rediscovers the joy of home baking.

Ingredients and equipment are flying out of the shops, but lurking in the background of every single bageled bun and baget being baked on the screen is a humble piece of kit that in too many of our hands is overlooked, misunderstood and abused.

I'm talking about the oven.

It's the commonest piece of domestic technology, a boom to the busy cook and

one that's seen electricity and gas hold off the challenge of the microwave. It's our friend in

the kitchen, but more often than not it's a source of frustration and bafflement.
