Yesterday I sat down with Malcolm Gladwell to talk about his new book,

Revenge of the Tipping Point, which comes out on October 1st.

It's a sequel, but not the kind you might expect.

Malcolm doesn't just rehash the theory of social epidemics, put forth in his first book which you probably read the tipping point published in 2000.

He expands on it, challenges it, digs into the dark side of the idea he popularized.

And in true Gladwell fashion, he does it by weaving together wild stories.

Like how a 1970s TV miniseries change the way Americans think about the Holocaust,

how a movie-star handsome Florida man built Medicare out of a billion dollars.

Stories that seem unrelated, but that in Gladwell's hands

come together to form an irresistible argument.

During our chat, Malcolm said something that stuck with me.

In my experience there are a few things more pleasurable than having the opportunity to update your knowledge of the world. the

knowledge of the world,

amend your preconceptions,

or just flat out, find out that you were wrong.

It's like an opportunity to start over the experience you know as a kid you would read a book and you I would read a book and I would read a book and I would read a book and I would misunderstand it then I'd read it a second time and I'd, oh, that was the killer, you know, that kind of thing.

I've never gotten over the kind of particular pleasure that comes from reversing your kind of understanding.

That idea, the pleasure of realizing you're wrong.

It's at the heart of Malcolm's work.

He's constantly challenging our assumptions, making us see the world in new ways.

Which brings me back to my last conversation with Malcolm about his book, The Bomber Mafia.
