So one of the things I know that the Holy Spirit does when he comes over us and takes us up in

himself is witnesses to the Lordship of Jesus. He assures your conscience. Jesus is your king.

Jesus is real. Jesus is true. Jesus is more precious than porn. That's the Holy Spirit that gives

you that deep conviction. It is a profound gift of grace that the Holy Spirit gives us. The

deep conviction that Jesus is our king. So what else does the Spirit give when Jesus

baptizes us with Him? That's John Piper's focus from John 1.25 to 34 in this episode of

Light and Truth. This sermon was originally preached at Bethlehem Baptist Church on November 23, 2008.

Now, here we could let ourselves go and strike out in the direction of the debate

between, is the baptism with the Spirit a second particular event of the Christian life marked by

speaking in tongues? Or is it the first decisive work of the Spirit which is synonymous virtually

with regeneration? We are baptized into the Spirit, into the body of Christ, and all made to drink

of one Spirit first Corinthians 12, 13, or some of those texts in Acts where the Spirit falls and

the mark of His falling as people speak in tongues. A big argument, right? A charismatic versus

whatever over here about whether or not to be baptized in the Spirit is to have one of those

later experiences by which we are enabled to speak in tongues. We could go there, and I have ideas

about that, but as I've tried to reflect on this, this gospel, not, you know, jump over to first

Corinthians, jump over to Acts. I don't think John would want us to do that. I don't think John

wants us to pose that question here. There may be implications for that question and what I'm about

to say, but I'm going to try to stay with what I see here in the gospel and let John answer the

question. So what happens to us when we're baptized in the Holy Spirit? And what does it refer to?

Let's let John define it for us, and I'll give you the heads up as I give you specifics from the
