Summary

What is the "Friend/Enemy Distinction"? On its face, it sounds simple enough; maybe it's just an understanding of how we differentiate between people we like and people we don't. Everyone does that to some degree, but what happens when things divide very simply into one of two categories, friend and enemy, win or lose, live or die, in that moment when the threat is no longer whether or not you pay a little bit more in taxes, but whether or not you go to jail.

I'm going to be honest. I'm very excited about this episode. This is something that we've been

0:05.4

talking about internally for quite some time, and that is the question of the friend-inemey

0:10.8

distinction. What exactly is it? Because it sounds kind of on the face, simple enough. Sure,

0:16.5

you have friends, you have enemies. You have people you agree with. You have people that you disagree

0:19.4

with. But it's more than that. It's actually part of somewhat of a comprehensive political theory

0:25.7

that was discussed and thought about in this book called the concept of the political in the

0:32.6

mid-20th century, which is a fairly volatile time for politics, war, international relations,

0:38.9

et cetera. But in this book and in this theory, it's questioning what politics actually is.

0:46.9

So it's not just something as simple as saying, do I agree with this person? Do I disagree with

0:50.0

this person on any topic? It's a little bit more existential in nature. And the thing is,

0:55.2

is that this particular philosophy, its origins are very controversial. But what's so fascinating

1:02.6

is that you're actually starting to see a lot of people talk about it. And the revival of it

1:07.7

is coming from both the left and the right.

1:11.5

And so what we're going to do today on this episode is we're going to talk about this concept,

1:15.4

this theory.

1:16.4

Does it have any merits whatsoever?

1:18.6

Who came up with it?

1:20.0

What was that guy's background like?

1:21.8

And is it currently going on whether we like it or not?

1:24.9

Is this something that we have to contend with and deal with?

1:27.3

Or is this something that we can, I don't know, perhaps overcome?

1:33.3

We're going to be talking all of that. I'm more on this episode of making the argument.
