On a cold night in January 2017, five comedians gathered around a table in the back of a dark

and cramped restaurant in New York's Greenwich Village.

The restaurant sits on a comedy club that often has lines stretching around the block.

Many of them weren't planning on performing that night, but it had come to hang out at

a place they called home, a family dinner around the most important table in American

stand-up comedy.

The five were convened around this table for what would become one of the most unexpected

nights in recent comedy history.

For a $14 ticket, the audience of 110 or so people saw back-to-back performances

by Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, and Aziz Ansari.

By the time the MC John Laster introduced the final comic of the night, the room was pulsating.

As Dave Chappelle would later put it, the audience at the tiny club saw a billion dollars

worth of comedians that night. That evening's gathering may have been spontaneous,

but its meeting place was no coincidence.

Over the past 40 years, the comedy seller has been a mecca for the most beloved comics of this

era, and the restaurant upstairs has fueled the stomachs and minds of the tight-knit comedians

who found their home base there. Today on Proof from America's Test Kitchen,
