Summary

Led by Claire Chennault, the Flying Tigers were a group of American pilots who originally signed as mercenaries for China in 1941 to fight Japanese aggression in China and Burma. Chennault had worked to build China's air force since 1937 when the Japanese invaded China and seized Shanghai and Nanking, but finally received help from FDR in 1941 in the form of planes and pilots. Chennault had the answer for the fast Japanese Zero plane- but it would take training and discipline to make sure his men learned it. 0:58.0	histories and mysteries. This is a story of a group of American fighter pilots
1:03.0	who battled the Japanese in the skies over Burma and China between 1937 and 1945
1:10.0	earning a reputation for courage and determination that will last forever in the
1:15.0	annals of World War II history. They came from all branches of the American
1:19.0	military to fight originally as mercenaries on behalf of a beleaguered Chinese
1:24.0	nation and were led by a man who couldn't take no for an answer. Claire Lee
1:29.0	Shenalt. With his leadership they racked up some of the most impressive air
1:33.0	victories in war history against an air power that was considered to be the
1:37.0	most advanced of its time. They became known for the markings on their
1:42.0	planes which resembled the teeth and eyes of a tiger shark. Markings the Japanese
1:47.0	pilots came to know and fear. They were called the flying tigers.
1:53.0	For America after the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on
1:57.0	December 7, 1941 and the news of the surrender of American and British forces
2:02.0	in the Philippines and the atrocities that followed. There was very little
2:07.0	good news coming back to kindle the American spirit. But the success of the
2:12.0	flying tigers against Japanese pilots who had rained destruction down upon our
2:17.0	Navy was pivotal in restoring American morale in those early months of
2:21.0	American involvement in the war, which now had the fight evil on two
2:25.0	fronts, one against the Nazis in Europe and North Africa and one against the
