This episode I'm discussing Raymond Moody's 1975 book, Life After Life.

When Raymond Moody Jr., then a philosopher forcision in training, published Life after

life in 1975, he altered the public and academic conversation about dying.

The book introduced the term near-death experience and presented a structured

study of dozens of people who had been clinically dead or near-death yet later revived.

Before Moody, such reports circulated mostly as private stories or spiritual anecdotes. After him,

they became a subject of cultural fascination,

scientific investigation and philosophical debate. Moody interviewed more than 100 individuals

who temporarily crossed the threshold of death, victims of cardiac arrest, surgical accidents,

drowning, traumatic injury. Instead of dismissing

their accounts as hallucination or religious fantasy, he compared them, extracted common elements

and treated them like data. What emerged was a surprisingly consistent pattern of experience,

one powerful enough to challenge materialist

assumptions about the mind, and to suggest that consciousness might continue when bodily

function ceases. Among the recurring features Moody documented was out-of-body experience.
