| 0:50.3 | a scam where real estate investors steal ownership of a home on paper without the |
| 0:57.5 | real homeowners knowledge. They'll identify recently deceased homeowners who didn't leave a will |
| 1:03.8 | and track down like far-flung heirs to the property, convincing them, sometimes through fraud, |
| 1:12.3 | to sell their shares. |
| 1:18.7 | Then these predatory buyers can evict the existing residents, who might be family members, |
| 1:23.0 | and sell the property, often doubling or tripling their investments. |
| 1:26.9 | To give an example, say you've been living with your grandmother who passed away, |
| 1:29.8 | and you assume that the house now belongs to you. |
| 1:36.6 | Someone might knock on your door and say, I've tracked down your second and third cousins and bought their shares of the house. So now I own part of your home and I want to sell. |

| 1:42.5 | It's also important to note that these schemes do disproportionately affect |
| 1:47.2 | communities of color. So it's also creating a situation where black homeowners are being |
| 1:52.1 | stripped in yet another way, when you look at history, yet another way of a path towards |
