Summary

In 1978, a team of Soviet geologists working deep in the Siberian taiga came across something they never expected to see: a house. As it turned out, they had stumbled on a family that had lived in complete isolation for decades – they weren’t even aware of World War Two. Sophie Pinkham, author of the new book “The Oak and the Larch: A Forest History of Russia and Its Empires,” tells us the story of the Lykov family and what drove them into the forest. We always want to hear from you! If you have a question or story for us, give us a call at 315-992-7902 and leave a message, or send an email to hello@atlasobscura.com.

The year is 1978.

So the helicopter is loaded with geologists. During this period in the Soviet Union, there were a lot of geologists

exploring various parts of Siberia, looking for diamonds, gold, and other treasures, which were

They're not expecting to see any sign of human settlement at all,

but to their great surprise, as they were sort of hovering,

0:58.3

looking for a landing site, they saw a house.

1:03.7

And they couldn't see any people,

1:05.8

but it was clear from the way the garden looked that someone was taking care of it.

1:09.6

It wasn't an abandoned settlement. This was not necessarily good news. Coming across another human being out here

1:18.0

could be even more dangerous than coming across a wild animal. This was a period when the

1:23.4

gulag system was winding down, and you never really knew who you were going to run into.

1:30.0

They had a mass amnesty in the 1950s.

1:33.8

They gave amnesty only to the criminals, not to the political prisoners.

1:39.2

And so there was a period when the taiga was populated in large part by criminals who were trying to kind of make

1:48.9

it back from the Gulag. And not everyone in the Gulag was imprisoned there unjustly, right? Some

1:54.4

people were actual murderers. So the geologists took every precaution.

2:02.4

They set up their camp around 10 miles away from where they had spotted the settlement,
