The story became family history long before anyone realized it was becoming a ghost story.

When people talked about it later, they usually started with the same night.

It happened shortly after the family moved into a brand new house on the edge of town,

back when the neighborhood was still unfinished,

and construction crews arrived most mornings before sunrise.

There was no history attached to the property, no previous owners,

and no old family stories connected to the place. If anyone had suggested the house would

one day become associated with paranormal experiences, the family would have laughed. At the time,

his older brother had only been dating his girlfriend for about a month.

She came over one Saturday evening to watch movies, spend time with him, and get away from a stressful week.

By midnight, she wasn't feeling well, so she ended up falling asleep in his room while he stayed awake playing video games.

Years later, his brother could still describe the moment clearly. She had been asleep

for at least an hour while he sat in the glow of the television, focused on whatever game he was

playing. Then, without warning, she sat straight up in bed. At first, he assumed she had simply

woken up, but when he asked if she was okay, she didn't answer.

She wasn't looking around the room like someone waking from a deep sleep.

She was staring at the bedroom door as if someone were standing on the other side of it.

Before he could decide whether to wake her fully, the door handle moved.

The bedroom door cracked open a few inches and his brother immediately got up because he knew nobody else was home. Their parents were out for the evening and the rest of the family was away that weekend. He crossed the room, pulled the door open and checked the hallway, but every room was empty. When he returned to the bedroom, his girlfriend was still staring
