Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

We've been meditating on the Fifth Commandment.

Tragically, too many people are killing themselves by the abuse of alcohol or recreational

drugs.

Most people drink alcohol not primarily because they prefer the taste of that drink over say some other drink.

Too often most people drink because they can't be social or relax or have fun otherwise.

And most people smoke pot because life is in their view too boring, too overwhelming or too painful and they can't or smoke pot to alter their thinking, feeling and behavior.

Alcohol is a good in itself, but it can be abused in the way I just stated.

However, recreational drug use is always evil.

This is why we need to touch on the fact that we have a trend across the country with the legalization of recreational drugs.

And yet the catechism makes it clear that we must be temperate with food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine and avoid excess with those substances.

But recreational drugs, that is, drugs that aren't used for medical purposes are morally sinful.

The Catechism says the use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life,
