car accidents, overdoses, falls, strokes, and every kind of crisis imaginable.

The job exposed him to tragedy on a regular basis, but it also taught him something important.

Everything happened for a reason. Sometimes the reason was medical. Sometimes it was mechanical.

Sometimes it was bad luck. Whatever the answer happened to be, there was always one.

That mindset helped him do the job.

changed everything arrived on a cold November evening. Rain had been falling steadily for hours,

and the roads shimmered beneath streetlights, as Jacob and his partner worked their way

through a long shift. It had already been a busy night when dispatch sent them to a residential

neighborhood on the edge of town for a possible cardiac arrest.
