Medes, Persians or Achaemenids? Ancient sources rarely cared to differentiate them. Their tribes united and became kingdoms, and their kingdoms turned into empires. Some of the most decisive chapters of ancient warfare were written when their ever-changing borders brought them face-to-face with the great western powers.

Because what I usually do with ancient warfare, which is slightly different from how I'm

going to do ancient history right now, because ancient history is a little bit more guided,

a stronger editorial hand, let's say, in how every issue shapes up.

And with ancient warfare, I sort of looked at all the proposals that came in and then tried

to see what would fit together as sort of a coherent theme.

And with this, I thought it was important to sort of show that the term Persians and Persia

can be applied to a particular region and a particular

people across a large span of time.

And in a sense, the modern Iranians are the descendants of the ancient Persians and so forth.

So I tried to pick articles that sort of covered various aspects of the Persians,

with an emphasis on the earliest history and then sort of snippets from later periods as well.
