Happy New Year!

A New Year that began with what feels like some very old stories.

Pretty much every year I can remember, has kicked off with a rar about the railways,

as grumpy people go back in the cold and the dark and the wet and discover their pain more,

to travel to work.

And of course, the hardy perennial, the NHS winter crisis.

I'll have some reflections on those in just a second.

And I'll also be talking to this week's podcast guest,

the woman who could be our next foreign secretary, or many think,

the next leader of the Labour Party, talking to Emily Thornbury about what the finder,

what made her the woman she is.

My parents split up when I was seven, and my dad sort of disappeared.

He went abroad and we suddenly had no money,

and so we didn't have any heating and we didn't have.

Mum had real problems with the bills, and the bailiffs turned up.

I remember they used to wear bowl hats in the 60s,

and eventually we were chucked out because we weren't paying the mortgage,

and we were made homeless.

And I'll also be talking to about some of the judgments that she'll have to make as foreign secretary,

and what scares her.

I'm concerned about the erasibility of Donald Trump.
