Summary

This week:

In the magazine we look at the recent protests in France. The Spectator's Douglas Murray argues that racism is not the problem but that a significant chunk of the unintegrated immigrant population is. He is joined by Dr Rakib Ehsan, author of Beyond Grievance: What the Left Gets Wrong about Ethnic Minorities, to investigate why Europe riots. (01:16)

Also this week:

Journalist Ivo Dawnay and The Spectator’s associate editor Toby Young discuss the plight of 'politically exposed persons' in the magazine this week. This is of course in light of the news that Nigel Farage has had his bank account closed, with many speculating he has been 'debanked' simply because of his political views and associations. Ivo and Toby both join the podcast to discuss  the ‘debanking’ crisis. (18:11).

And finally:

Wimbledon might be on, but it is padel that William Skidelsky is more excited about in his piece for the magazine this week, as he charts the rise of the increasingly popular racket sport. He joins the podcast alongside Tia Norton, British female number one padel player. (27:45)

Hosted by Lara Prendergast and William Moore.

Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

Hello and welcome to the edition podcast from The Spectator, where each week we look at three pieces from the magazine with the writers behind

0:38.8

them. I'm Laura Prendergars, the Spectator's Executive Editor. And I'm William Moore,

0:43.7

the Spectator's Features Editor. On this week's episode, we'll be investigating what's behind

0:48.5

the rise of gang violent across Europe. We'll be discussing Nigel Farage and the debanking crisis, and we'll be learning

0:56.4

about the joys of paddle tennis. First up, in the magazine this week, we look at the recent

1:02.4

riots in France. The spectators, Douglas Murray, argues that French racism is not the problem,

1:09.1

but a significant chunk of the unintegrated immigrant population is.

1:14.3

He joins us now alongside Dr. Rahib Asan, author of Beyond Grievance,

1:19.4

what the left gets wrong about ethnic minorities.

1:22.7

Douglas, could you take our listeners through your argument?

1:26.3

Well, to begin with, it's simply to do with part of the reporting of the appalling events in France in recent days,

1:33.7

which assumes that the rioting, looting, burning, and much more is a response to, a genuine response were to, this police arrest and shooting of a 17-year-old who was joyriding at the time.

1:53.7

And I think even to do this, and the BBC and many other mainstream media outlets have done this, is to miss the problem. We could have a

2:04.8

conversation until the end of all time about exactly how the police in France or anywhere else

2:08.9

should detain somebody who's joyriding, whether or not they should be able to use lethal

2:14.4

force and much more. None of which explains why a significant chunk of the

2:21.8

population in France should, for instance, decide to respond to such an event by breaking into

2:27.7

the local Louis Vuitton raiding the handbag section. It seems to be taken as read by much of the non-French media that this is in somehow

2:37.2

an eruption of genuine feeling based on a terrible police event. And I think by this point,
