First up, how could a troubled teenager with a minor drug habit have become a knife-wielding terrorist within two years of his being jailed?

Ian Aitchison, a former prisons officer, writes in this week's cover piece that our prisons are becoming finishing schools for terrorists.

James, you write on your poll this week that terror is now the toughest issue facing the Tories.

How so exactly?

I think the problem essentially is this. The public expect the government to protect them.

But there is a problem. In the aftermath of 9-11, terrorists were generally inspired by Al-Qaeda,

and what they wanted to put off was spectacular attacks. That meant that from the moment someone was radicalized,

there was quite some time before them carrying out an attack.

And that enabled the state to build a case against them

and prosecute them for relatively serious offences.
