It's 1846. An eight-year-old girl named Patty Reed is headed west on the Oregon Trail, along with her family.

In their wagons is everything they thought they would need on their long journey. Clothing and bedding,

ample food supplies and housewares, rifles, a spinning wheel, and butter churn.

And among the few toys that Patty had been allowed to bring was a tiny wooden doll.

This doll, and we'll call her dolly since that's the only name she had, is small.

She's maybe four inches in height and has jointed limbs and a painted face and hair.

Her clothing is hand sewn from scraps of fabric. Probably meant for a doll's house, there's nothing

particularly remarkable about her, except for one thing. The wagon train that Dolly and Patty Reed

were traveling in became known as the Donner Party.

In the spring of 1846, a group of 500 wagons set out from Independence, Missouri.

They carried settlers bound for the Oregon Territories and California.

And among those 500 wagons were nine that belonged to the Donner and the Reed
